| Karla Hood has been sewing about as long as she has had the power of speech, but fell in love with historic costume in high school. She began her college career as a fine arts major, but switched to theatrical costuming, attending East Tennessee State University and the University of Tennessee. She has designed costumes for many shows, such as Man of la Mancha, Tartuffe, Hello, Dolly!, Anything Goes, Merry Wives of Windsor, and many others. Over the past 22 years, however, she has been concentrating on historical clothing for the reenactor, creating Medieval and Renaissance costumes, as well as clothing from the American Civil War era. She concentrates on making the clothing look as natural as possible, so it appears as if one wears it every day--rather than looking like a "costume". She is an active member of the Society for Creative Anachronism, where her name is Mistress Eleanor of Ashley. She currently resides in a lovely house in Tennessee with her artist husband. And there is always more wonderful garb to make! | Karen Farris has been sewing for, gosh, about as long as Karla has, and her love of historic costuming sprang out of her love for the theatre. Although her degree is in Music, from the University of Tennessee, it is her love for sewing and costuming that has been the center of her career. For the past 16 years, she has owned a custom clothing establishment, creating everything from Star Trek costumes to wedding dresses to, of course, historical clothing. Research is one of the great joys of her work, and she believes in education as well as quality. Her philosophy is that the more a customer knows about what he or she is wearing, the more fulfilling an experience wearing that period garment will be. She is very active in the Society for Creative Anachronism, a Medieval re-enactment organization, where her name is Mistress Alysea of Ashley. She lives in the beautiful hills of Tennessee with her husband, who has learned how to take hems. She also enjoys directing a madrigal group (well dressed, of course!), cooking (especially historical cooking), is very active in her church, and has a gargoyle collection! | |
